muslimgamer asked: What do you think of Jackie Chan? One of the most influential and best martial arts actors ever, or has Hollywood soften him up and he should have stuck to more hardcore stuff?
Jackie Chan is possible the most influential figure in kung fu cinema history. Yes, more so than Bruce Lee.
I love Jackie. He’s made some great films and he’s made some shit films but, one thing’s for sure, he made a certified classic every decade between 1970 and 2000.
He’s also, undoubtedly, one of the most entertaining on screen performers to have ever lived.
Hollywood definitely diluted him…a lot. I loved when he first began his big Hollywood movies as he stated he’d take his paycheck and put it towards more traditional Hong Kong styled Jackie films.
Unfortunately, we started seeing films like “Rob-B-Hood” (which I like, by the way) and the very uneven “The Accidental Spy.”
On top of that, his Hollywood output has gone from good to fucking horrendous. But I don’t really blame him. The guy is old. He wants to start doing broader comedies and that’s fine. Look at Clint Eastwood. He’s 112 years old and can only play a grizzled old racist.
I do wish Jackie would have put out more Hong Kong films. I still think, to this day, that he has a “Drunken Master 3” in him. Just one more ode to the old school before he hangs it up for good.
But while I don’t agree with his choices, his legacy counters any kind of attitude I might have about his awful recent output. Do I hold hope? Absolutely. I’m pretty sure his new film, “Skiptrace,” will be another embarrassing sack of horrible but it could be good…right?
